RABBIT, RABBIT

Do you say "rabbit rabbit" on the first of the month to ensure good luck? While the origin of this rodent repetition is mostly unknown it seems to be most prevalent in Britain and North America and is rumored to go back as far as the 13th century. The custom is possibly attributable to Celtic tribes…

It's Black Cat Appreciation Day!Time to celebrate this often feared feline. Black Cat Appreciation Day was created by Wayne H. Morris to honor of his late sister, June, who had a black cat named Sinbad. The day was chosen to commemorate her passing. Why do some people fear the black cat? Well, we can probably…

TO DANCE WITH DEATH

Danse Macabre- the haunting orchestral masterpiece that originated in the early 1870's by Saint-Saëns was originally not so well received. Bummer. Enter Franz Liszt to put his magic fingers to work and what do ya know... it became quite a hit. 🎹 I must admit I prefer the rather chaotic original version...but I digress. If you want…

Mercedes McCambridge was an Oscar winning actress of early radio, stage and later in her career– film and television. Legendary filmmaker Orson Welles once called her “the world’s greatest living radio actress.” The distinctive raspy voice that made her a star on the airwaves amazed audiences when she hit the big screen. Her ability to personalize a role and make it her own made the ordinary, extraordinary. McCambridge lived a life filled with tragedy and melodrama and on this day, the anniversary of her death back in 2004, I’ll try to keep it on the lighter side.
Do you say “rabbit rabbit” on the first of the month to ensure good luck? While the origin of this rodent repetition is mostly unknown it seems to be most prevalent in Britain and North America and is rumored to go back as far as the 13th century. The custom is possibly attributable to Celtic tribes for whom Hares were an important symbol and where we derived the superstition of carrying a lucky rabbit’s foot. I’ve found a few other derivations of the phrase as well including “white rabbit” or “rabbit, rabbit, rabbit.” As for the phrase appearing in print, I’ve only been able to date it back to 1909 when it is referred in a book titled ‘Notes and Queries’ where I found the following:
RIP to Leonard Nimoy who died on this day back in 2015.
Who remembers this episode which premiered on this day in 1960? Vera Miles stars as Millicent Barnes in the famous "Mirror Image" episode of the classic CBS television series "The Twilight Zone." #OTD #twilightzone
It was 51 years ago today when Keith Sapsford, a teenager from Australia fell to his death from a plane that was taking off from the Sydney Airport. Just three days after running away from Boys' Town, a home for "troubled youth" Keith snuck onto the tarmac at Sydney Airport. It was there where the fourteen year old found a DC-8 that was set to depart for Tokyo. He climbed up into the wheel compartment of the plane and sat on the tarmac for a few hours awaiting take off. Unfortunately for Keith, he did not consider that when the aircraft reopened the wheel compartment to retract its wheels after departure he would fall to his death. At that same time, amateur photographer John Gilpin was taking photos at the airport. In those images he accidentally captured the exact moment Keith fell from the plane as it took off. Gilpin didn't realize he had captured the moment on film until he developed the photos a week later.
The original "House on Haunted Hill" opened on this day back February 17, 1959. This horror classic features a fine cast of characters gathered at the home of wealthy eccentric Frederick Loren (played by hottie Vincent Price) where he makes an offer to his guests; survive the night in the creepy mansion and receive $10,000. Definitely time to watch this perfectly campy horror classic again. #OTD #vincentprice #masterpiece #horrormovies #classichorror #horrorfan
There has been a lot of interest in the Netflix docuseries "Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel," which premiered earlier this week. The four-part series takes an in depth look at the mysterious death of Canadian college student and hotel guest Elisa Lam. While the doc focuses heavily on Lam, it also details the tragic history of the Cecil and touches on some of the serial killers that stayed in the hotel. One being Richard Ramirez and the other, lesser known, Jack Unterweger. Check out this excerpt from the SKC archives that unravels the story of this globetrotting serial killer who commited murders in multiple countries.
President’s Day mostly comes and goes with little to no fanfare, a paid holiday for a chosen few and maybe a great mattress sale, but this year it got me thinking, have there been any weird or extremely interesting causes of death for any of our former leaders? We all learn about assassinations of presidents in history class but I was looking for something a bit more unusual, and I found it – the death of Zachary Taylor. I was so excited to spend some time with the ladies of the podcast @cincycabinetofcuriosities Hometown Haunts! For the past couple months I've made guest appearances discussing local historic murders and thought you all may enjoy these too!! The latest episode dropped last night and we talked about Anna Marie Hahn, a Cincinnati serial killer who poisoned her victims and preyed, primarily, on older men. Last month @redcatcomics @cswyellokat @jbkoehler and I dove into the case of Edyth Klumpp, another area murderess whose trial also made international news. We had a blast, hope you enjoy!
